1. hit your kids
2. buy them a kindle fire or a nexus. less money and they're the same thing which i'm sure is something that appeals to a busy mom on the go.

A regular kindle is just for reading. Kindle fire is pretty much a fully functioning tablet, as is a nexus.

kindle fire is amazons ipad and nexus is googles. my niece had a kindle fire and i have a nexus 7 and they both work really well and cost less. but if it has to be an ipad, i wouldn't bother with the mini.

iPad Mini would probably be just fine. It's just a matter of what size you're looking to get. If you're worried about cost then you really shouldn't be buying a tablet IMO. Kindle Fire and Nexus are acceptable, but definitely avoid any of the cheap-o knock off tablets. I like the iPad Mini form factor/price point.

I've been wanting a tablet for so long, but can't justify it with having my laptop. Maybe when I get a desktop again.

You could look into the refurbished products, or perhaps the "iPad 2" model.
