Why is the standard based on a percentage of the bill and not the number of dishes ordered? I order a $60 plate with lobster and steak, the waiter takes the dish and puts it on my table. I order an $8 salad, the waiter takes the dish and puts it on my table. The rest is the work of the chef who doesn't get tipped. Assuming the currently standard of 20% tip (f**k me), why does putting a $60 plate command $12 tip, while the $8 plate command only $1.60 tip? If I order an $8 salad and put in $2 tip, I'm generous, but if I put in a $5 tip for the steak and lobster, I'm a cheapskate.

It's assumed that the price of the meal will reflect the level of service being provided. It's not perfect, but it's close enough.

Usually the cooks get their share of the tips. The ones getting hosed are the prep cooks and dishwashers and the like.
Since tipping allows businesses to pay below minimum wage...often far below, I've become pretty disgusted with the whole custom of tipping. People should be getting no less than the minimum wage, period. Any tips should be a bonus above and beyond that, dependent on the quality of the food and service.
If it makes my lunch cost 20 cents more, so f*cking what?

What about bartenders though? If I'm drinking beer at a bar, I tip the same dollar per beer served whether it's an 8 dollar craft beer or a 2 dollar yeungling. Am I doing it wrong?

I hate people who complain about tips. If you can't afford to tip, you can't afford to eat there. It's essentially a consumption tax and it's hilarious how all of you demand better pay for workers etc etc etc but when you have to pay for it all of a sudden it's disgusting.
Also, if you didn't have to tip your lunch would be way more than 20 cents more. Probably 10% more across the board at least, and your service would be horrendous. Ever been to Europe?
I always tip like 25% unless I'm spending $100+. It only ends up being a few extra bucks, the worker needs it more than you, and you get significantly better service if you ever come back.
