There are lots that do this. They try to solicit money from me on the street corner every day.
My colleague is a Navy vet. Their VFW regularly goes out on the streets looking for vets that they can sign up for benefits and get off the streets. He said that more than half the people they approach who profess to be "veterans" turn out to be lying.

You know Prof, for years here in Chicago I've seen homeless with either the clothes or a sign saying they're vets and I'm this/close to stopping because no vet should have to live like that (no person, really, but especially vets) but then I think: "Or is this just a ruse?"
I think you just answered my question.

Why should vets be taken care of anymore than your average homeless person? All who serve get paid, most who serve never see combat, etc.
It is only bootlicking militarists who support special benefits for veterans.

this is the result of the creepy hero worship we have in the US.
end that and you'll end people pretending to be veterans.
