Denali is the name that Alaska wanted it to be called, the name the Alaska legislature has asked the US to name it before. Some people in Ohio thought it ought be called McKinley.
it's also the name of the park. i know you're not really chiding obama for it but some people actually are and it's silly
had obama renamed it something like what you suggest that would be obnoxious and i would have thought he should have renamed it to "Denali"

This was a thing clear back when I was a kid. ( I'm an Alaskan, originally.) Amazing that it took this long.

Denali's been the traditional name for God knows how long, so makes sense for it to go back to its roots.
