What if the US is the Real Life North Korea?

North Korean are told by their government that they're a powerful nation. They're told that they lead the world in scientific advances, human rights, and military might. The information that the citizens received are controlled by the government and there is almost no flow of information into the regime.
At least that's what we're told about North Korea and other oppressive regimes.
But what if we're actually in an oppressive regime and the news we see about other regimes were actually manufactured to make us think that we're in a good society? What if the information we received is almost completely closed off and other nations are trying to reach us and show us how much the world has advanced, but couldn't?
We're told that we lead the world in innovation and free flow of technology. The rest of the world like to use technology developed by the US, like Facebook, Youtube, etc. But what if the rest of the world isn't using those technology, and the reason we think they are is because the government limit access only to companies that they can control? We have an electoral system where we choose our leaders, but when we find out that they don't keep their promises we have the mentality of "politicians lied, big deal." We accepted that its okay for our leaders to suck. What if the world is way more advanced and their society has developed to a point beyond what the government has allowed us to see? We only get to see the images that justify us as being a strong nation. What if we think that the images of people trying to restore Islamic government as backwards looking, but don't realize that we're becoming a fundamentalist electoral system society?
