An acquaintance of mine from high school posted a long rant about how frustrating it is for people to be mocking the conditions in Rio. He had some fairly good points TBH, although Rio is giving the media a lot of ammo to work with....

Remember all the posts about the Russian olympics? Stop picking shitty countries/cities. But, its all corrupt anyways.

That was part of his point though. Rio is kinda shitty, and millions have to live in these conditions year around. So it's just sorta rich for foreigners to flood the area and then complain 24/7 and focus only on negatives. It's also annoying how this is carrying over well beyond the accurate gripes about infrastructure to just insulting everything about it......

Yeah but Rio promised that the Olympics would make Rio not shitty in general. But that never happened

I know quite a few Brazilians (and I used to travel there frequently) and I feel bad for how this is making their country look. I wish this would go off well for them so they can take a little bit of national pride when their country gets put on the international stage. They have been getting rocked with all forms of bad news in the last few year and they deserve a break.

It's a great country.
