Relationships suck because to many people want instant gratification, overlook serious long-term flaws but act like minor temporary ones are show stoppers, try to mold the other into their concept of an ideal mate or worry to much about what their friends think than what their mate thinks.

Many friends I have and have had over the years have these issues over and over with relationships. The bad part is they won't realize it even when I point it out to them.

Because of expectations.

Instead of just enjoying each other and having fun, we load relationships with expectations, often which ignore very real issues and often which are not realistic expectations anyway.

Most western cultures are so hellbent in making sure the image of a correct relationship be viewed as a constantly, overtly pleasurable experience for both people, that only those who can actually intuit what is supposed to happen between two people that are in love, are going to figure out how to stay together. Basically a horrible prognosis for a short-attention span paradigm.
