I have been following this issue very closely and in all ways it cannot end well. The U.S. never should have tried to destabilize Assad. You think they would have learned after failure in Iraq and Afghanistan. There are definitely institutional issues in the U.S. government where failure is not admitted and for careerisms sake you have to speak the party line. Even to this day there will be some that believe the U.S. didn't lose the Vietnam war... but I digress...
I don't think EU nations should be admitting large quantities of refugees, no country should, if we still believe in the idea that countries ought to look after the interests of its citizens. It is damaging for all countries to let in thousands or hundreds of thousands of unskilled workers with different cultural norms when their are already resource and job shortages in most of the countries. It impoverishes the average citizen and only creates tension and violence.
I will be very surprised if the EU survives in its current state for the remainder of our lifetimes.
