the main problem is that these justices live very long lives and have such an immense impact
i dont think they should serve for life. they should have a set term, and after that they can go back to whatever lower court judge they were, or retire to their estates in the country. that way, people don't freak out over every justice because there's enough seats up over time
as i've said elsewhere the the constitution needs to be redone. what if they had 16 year terms, staggered every 2 years with a new one, and a SCJ who served until he died? each term of president would then choose 2, along with replacements if any die. i think then we wouldn't get up in arms -- it would require 2 terms from one president to get 4/9 justices. it would take at least 2 presidents to reach majority. i think then everyone wouldn't lose their minds when an opening came up
