Because the state can't even process my f**k tax refund without it getting lost. They are not competent enough to be trusted with the power to take the lives of citizens. The state (and government in general) also has a very very long and illustrious history of taking this power, and then abusing it. The state is so dangerous with this power that is has managed to devise and perpetrate crimes that we consider even WORSE than murder, like genocide. It's frustrating and very unsatisfying to know someone deserves to die, but recognizing that no man or manmade institution can ever be trusted with the power to carry out such a sentence.
