Seriously. Check the electoral map for 1968. George f**k Wallace (a raging segregationist) neatly swept up the Deep South. 4 years after '64, one of histories greatest champions of racism becomes the only third party candidate to take entire states' electoral votes during a general election. The south made its opinion known. And, with the exception of Carter (the funny looking peanut farmer from Georgia) the south has been quite firmly in the hands of the GOP ever since, with little chance of a change anytime soon.
Someone shot the partisan identity of the U.S. with an opposite gun, and it only really cemented after the passage of the civil rights act.

Crazy, the Diabetis map correlates with Indian reservations in my state.
Of course, Indians get commodities from the government which are pretty unhealthy.
