and i don't think it was insane militarism, it was a measured response to harm being done to us. our oceans couldn't protect us entirely any more and so we reasonably needed to be able to destroy and remake any country on earth in our image in response to that threat

i think the US defense budget is too low; anything under 5% of GDP is unacceptable. the future of humanity depends on it and so the US should spend more
