You're right but what made this country special was the huge middle class. Now that's disappearing. And with all the wealth being sucked up, and with all the state-provided things (like decent schools) that can propel somebody from lower into middle-class being chopped, I can only imagine these lunatics want nothing but rich and poor, like Mexico, with little in between.

Case in point: letting the student loan interest rate double, doing nothing as they went on vacation. That sure helps students AND the job market!

As Elizabeth Warren pointed out recently: TBTF banks can borrow money from the Fed for almost nothing. Why can't students have the same rate?

It just gets starker and starker every year. What I don't get is how people just sit there: news flash, they're not going to make any distinction between "R" and "D" when you're out of a job, or poor, or out of a house.

Actually LNRW the other option we used to have but what is now gone?

The media.

For years, the media is what kept gov't in check by outing and shaming those in power for their abuses. On a local level they still do--political investigative journalism is alive and well in Chicago, for instance.

However on a national level it's simply been turned into a red vs. blue football game, and the truth you're going to believe is the one put forth by your "team," with faux "journalists" like David Gregory doing the play by play on Sunday morning.

That's what changed. When the media decided that it had to stay "neutral" and present both sides with equal validity. That is a zero sum game.

But here's what's funny and maybe somebody else can figure this out (I can't): the press on a local level still does its job.

Here in Illinois reporters POUNCE on any whiff of corruption--that's why we have governors in prison and are now shipping off Jesse Jackson Jr. The list is endless.

But when you get to the national level, all of a sudden it goes blind, deaf and dumb.

Oh God corporations ruined radio here. I remember that.

Thank God WXRT sort of survived that but... well, yeah.
