What issue was so important in 2006 that isn't apparent today? If you were opposed to it in 2006, you sure would have every reason to be opposed to it now.

I think Obama has said his perspective has changed since 2006 and the 2006 vote was more a political statement than anything else. Seems fair enough to me.

Besides, the economy is on much shakier grounds these days than in 2006.

If you google senate vote debt ceiling 2006 a pretty funny NYT article comes up. Sen Grassley (R) argues that raising the debt ceiling (to fund Bush's wars and build stuff in Iraq, presumably) is necessary to maintain the full faith and credit of the US. Meanwhile Harry Reid is arguing that it's fiscally irresponsible to raise the ceiling.

Dylan just beat me to it, and in fact I just recently posted about Republican Chuck Grassley (with much support) passionately arguing in 2006 about raising the debt ceiling. Oh but of course that was when the negro wasn't in office.

What's the big difference? I'll tell you what: I'm assuming Obama was against it back then because of the spending part (if taken at face value).

These bozos now don't give a crap about the spending/debt ceiling part, they're using it to extort us all into eradicating Obamacare--aka a hostage situation. They fought and lost the Obamacare battle. Rather than vow to fight another day legitimately through the democracy they are sworn to uphold, they decided to put a gun to the head of our economy, using the debt ceiling as the hostage.

The Obamacare issue has absolutely zero to do with the debt ceiling issue.

No, it's not mmkay. They all utilize this problem to their own benefits or agendas. Obama wasn't president in 2006 so of course it's easy to vote against it in protest. Now that he is president, it's tyranny to vote it against it. The context hasn't changed.

I honestly don't care what the republicans are doing right now or why they are doing it. Every single person should be against raising it.
