I don't think the us is any different. If your country is directly under threat then the citizens of most countries would probably fight. There's just hasn't really been a time for example here where we've been under threat since ww2. And in ww2 we had a shit load of volunteers.

I don't think it would be cathartic and I don't think hipsters would fight. I'm just saying we have 5 million rednecks and violent offenders in this country. If we ever got into a war with China we could field a million volunteers and take 50k casualties and the country would promptly get over it. Unlike say Italy, where a volunteer army would be the size of a soccer team and where death in battle earns you a local statue in your town.
