This feels too political. A week ago this flag was probably purchased primarily for southern pride (not like racists come out in droves to buy flags on the internet - they already have copies), which is what most people associate with it these days. Now a week later it's racism and bigotry. To me that's a problem because a week ago it was acceptable and today it's not. Why would the recent killing suddenly convince the country that it's a bad thing? It's a big deal because of where it happened. Had this killing happened anywhere else in the country, you wouldn't see the reaction to the flag you are seeing now. Sounds like someone with an agenda took an opportunity to try and force a change to the flag which again feels very political. Instead we should be focusing on the terrible act this guy did and how to prevent these things going forward. Not like anyone kills in the name of South Carolina any ways.
On a side note. Thomas Jefferson had slaves. Are we going to remove the Declaration of Independence?
We must not be enemies. Though passion may have strained, it must not break our bonds of affection. The mystic chords of memory will yet swell the chorus when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.
