So in this gambit we can never call out wrongdoing but must also counteract that by mentioning wrongdoing of the other side which amounts to... you got it, a zero-sum game!

There is no deficit to fix. Our deficit has shrunk and it's too small! Our debt in the medium term has already been stabilized to a point that it will hurt us.

For us non-economists how will it hurt us?
Unless you mean by that slashing spending we're stalling the economy which doesn't provide the tax revenue to apply to the debt, etc., etc.
The funny thing about the debt is that it's the ultimate red herring--these people don't care about the debt, they're merely using that as a backdoor way to slash gov't.
"Starving the beast until you can drown it in the tub." Norquist stuf and all that.
