I'll admit I'm hesitant to support any defunding of any police departments until I see what the proposed alternatives are. The vacuum that could create for any city could be huge.

It appears to be a movement that wants to transfer funds out of policing and into social work, housing and specialized mental health crisis teams.

All of these moves make alot of sense. Cops shouldn't be doing welfare checks or dealing with people in the midst of a crisis. They exist to maintain the monopoly of violence for the state, that's what they are good at and what they should stick with - going after violent felons, busting up organized crime, etc.

Specialization tends to increase productivity and there is a pretty good case to be made that the drug and mental health epidemic requires a specialized force to deal with it, not guys whose primary utility is being good at busting heads.

As I said earlier in this thread, the only way to get any groups attention in our system is by limiting their money. Just uttering “defund” is getting people in a tizzy, so if you want real change from our PDs, defunding threats followed by some real actions is the most effective path.

It's not defunding, it's disbanding. Then some other police force will be created with specific tasks for it. In the interim likely the county will be used, and it will possibly have a lot of the same problems (since they'll hire a lot of the same cops) but after the interim period is over the new force would have smaller scope, while other services would have expanded scope

Basically it's to clean house and not reform the existing department but rather just start with a clean slate. I think the people who say it means "no police" are generally against the idea and are possibly cops

last week tonight about the police this past week rightly points out that police are asked to do far too much that isn't "policing" because other services had money slashed. together with ever increasing funding for cops and civil asset forfeiture cops have so many toys. there's a picture of some minneapolis police with a single shot gas canister launcher that can shoot like 30 yards if you arc it with a f**k red dot flex sight on it. that's like $600. thats what they are spending money on, because they have the money
