Sevastapol has limited strategic value today, since Russia's black sea fleet has pretty much rusted away in port. The black sea itself really isn't that strategically important, as russia has 3 other fleets with much better access to the sea. However, sevastapol has a huge symbolic importance to russia. The black sea fleet was once the pride of the russian military, and sevastapol was it's home base. When the port and city originally were built, it was one of the first signs of russias ambition as a european/world power. The city has held out under siege in historic fashion, in the crimean war and ww2. The city is ethnically russian. Most people speak russian, and hold russian passports. If ukraine wants to drift west, it's not taking an iconic RUSSIAN city with it.
