It doesn't matter what they are advocating, using violence is never effective unless it serves a real strategic goal which cannot be achieved otherwise. Antifa has no goal other than to delay the occasional speech, and nothing they do changes any opinion that matters - not the Nazis, not their sympathizers, and not the people who are tempted by their rhetoric but remain unconvinced.
In fact, antifa is actively harming the resistance against the alt-right, largely by forcing the hand of those who prefer order over political correctness (which accurately describes about 85% or more of the population) and handing the alt-right a series of PR victories. Not only that, but they are behaving in a manner that is absolutely contrary to what deradicalization experts say is effective.
So:
1. They haven't and won't achieve anything meaningful.
2. They are interfering and setting back countless social workers and outreach groups that rely upon peaceful dialogue to reach these people.
3. They provide boundless media and PR opportunities that otherwise would not exist.
4. They escalate the stakes and danger of political protest for both sides.
It is actually disturbs me to see a group of militant people so painfully bad at what they do.
