Russia is a declining regional power. It's sphere of influence now extends to Eastern Ukraine, Crimea, Belarus, some central asian republics, parts of the Caucasus and that break away bit of Moldova.
It's obstruction of US foreign policy is not grand stratergy but for domestic consumption reminds the yokels in the regions of the USSR.

If Putin loses Crimea he loses a LOT domestic political support. He's positioned himself as a strong leader but losing this? A crown jewel of Russia for two centuries? It's why we should go hard against this. I'm just worried he's going to try something before Kerry gets there tomorrow.
