We didn't stop THAT attack, but we sure the hell stopped future ones. But that requires an Army. But since you are so smart and you know it all, you know that already. That's why you're saying they need a strong army to combat terrorism on their own soil.

I've got friends that work for the Navy. Their livlihoods depend on naval contracts to build ships like this.

That said, I don't think that we need a Navy any more. At least, not like we have now. Keep a few carriers close to home, and do drills on them to keep crews up on how they work. Scrap much of the rest of the fleet in favor of smaller, lighter (and fewer) ships carrying nothing by cruise missiles.

Then, let the Air Force take care of everything else. And, I don't mean from overseas bases. I mean fly them from bases here in the US, do the mission, then fly back.

Of course, these "missions" would be few and far between.
