It's not a public health issue though, it's essentially a labelling one. There are tests in place to check that things are safe to eat, they just didn't happen to test what it was. Horse meat is eaten in Europe anyway so there's no indication that it won't be safe.

Storm in a teacup really. Ultimately finding you've eaten one herbivore prey animal instead of another is not really a big deal. It's only an issue in the UK because after the BSE thing a few years back retailers are supposed to be able to track their meat to source, rather than tracking it to horse.

It's an issue in the UK because the thought of eating horse meat makes us feel sick. My mother ate horse meat during the second world war and enjoyed every succulent mouthful, until she found out why there was real meat and gravy on the plates for once, and why her mother didn't fancy any dinner that evening.

She could swallow disgusting much such as Woolton pie and sausage casserole made with lumps of gristle, turnips and the eternal chopped carrots without a murmur. Horse meat, no.

I don't know why anyone would eat meat that goes through our food systems.

This appears to be a result of meat suppliers coming under increased pressure from supermarkets to provide meat as cheaply as possible in order to maximise their profits.
