horizontal racism/bigotry is always confusing. the homophobia in the black community being particularly interesting.

You're right: when black people embrace homophobia or even weirder when you get black people employing anti-Semitism.

Horizontal racism is a nonsense term. Like reverse racism. Or double backflip with a twist racism.

Racism is racism.

But I don't get the homophobia. Makes no sense.

They are nonsense terms. Racism is racism. Cope with reality, even if it hurts.

Mostly what bothers me about it is that I worry it leads to a stratification of racism...as though some racism is more acceptable or justifiable than other racism. As though some group or situation can in any way legitimize it.

I think its more productive to simple revile it equally in all guises, as deserved.

Edit: Which is pretty much what you just said in your post. Although I'd subsitute New Balance wearers for the monopoly guy.
