While everything you said is true, even if people did save more, much of it would be consumed by inflation.
But as you say, we are a sing all summer and freeze all winter type of grasshopper.

When the majority of economic activity stems from consumerism, its hard to expect the government to tell people not to spend money.
As for Roths...my nastiest suspicion is that they'll find some way to tax it on the backend as well before I come to use it. Right now its a tax free happy fun cave...and I think it makes them crazy.

That's assuming they plan to retire in the US, right? If they plan to move to Colombia, it'd be much cheaper.

Well, it can't be stable. Some years the markets are up, some they're down. 8% might be a fair average, considering the slowdown in the west.

I posted this in another thread.. 20 years ago the average age for retirement was 55 or so..Now it's 61, and rising.. A big reason people are working longer now is because of HI, and health care cost..I retired at 55.. If I wasn't able to get my HI through my ex-employer at a 'fair/affordable' premium there's no way I would have been able to retire.. I would have to keep working, taking up a job that a younger person would get.
And the government does NOT want you to save.. In a service economy of course they want you to spend, spend and spend more.
