As an ex-Republican part of me is very disappointed and disheartened by what is happening to the GOP now-a-days..
But another LARGE part of me really don't give a fvck anymore. On the national level if they want to ride the Tea Party train to oblivion, so be it..

Newt was mostly moderate during the Clinton Admin..
When he was running for Prez in 2012 to kiss the asses of the TP and the far right loons in the GOP Newt turned to the right.
Now here in this article he is being mostly moderate again..
This is a perfect example of what has gone wrong with the GOP.. They thought the TP would be a good thing for the GOP.. A grass roots movement to further conservatism.. But once the TP showed how far to the right they really were it was too late for the GOP to back away.. And weaklings like Newt and Romney were to scared of the TP.. ROMNEY HAD no balls AT ALL.. He was a true wimp.
Now they're stuck on the TP train. They need someone on the NATIONAL level to be strong and to rally the GOP moderates and push the loons out..
I don't see that happening until at least 2020 though..

BTW since birthers was mentioned in the OP I CAN NOT wait for the 2016 election season to really warm up and Ted Cruz's bither status get into the spotlight..
It is going to be priceless. I would pay to watch the TP and the morons like Trump squirm and dodge.. But we'll get to watch it for free..
It's going to be great.

I don't remember EVER seeing anyone who ran for president who did such a complete change on his stances on issues as Romney did in 2012. Before 2012 he was a left of center Republican, then before the election he flip-flopped on virtually ever issue to kiss the asses of the TP.. I never saw anything like it.. Not to that extent.
Romney completely bent over..
As we discussed before, on the local level I can understand politicians kissing up to their constituents. There will always be local pockets of far right, and left voters.. But on the national level? Moderates win elections. Not the extremists.
Of course the conservative talking heads don't help the GOP out either.. Most of them scream daily on the air waves that the GOP has to move even farther to the right. And as with the TP, there are no GOP politicians who have the balls to tell the talking heads to STFU. The GOP made their bed, now they have to lie in it..

I was a big fan of Huntsman and would have easily voted for him. Problem is: he was the first one demolished in the primaries.
What's going to be REALLY interesting is how... Chris Christie fares. He was persona non grata with the TPM for not taking the opportunity to slam Obama after Sandy--a betrayal that will not be forgotten by many. Even Jeb Bush--who by most accounts if you were going to have a second Bush in the White House, it should have been him and not Dubya--will probably register as "soft" when we're talking about Birthers and people who are foaming at the mouth.
Save for Christie--who is not without flaw--the current oft-mentioned 2015 candidates are depressing: Santorum, Rand Paul, Rubio and the Bachmann-esque Ted Cruz, who's never thought of a stupid thing he didn't say.
So this puts us right back to square one, where you have a GOP that is simply imploding and an unchallenged Dem party, which means we have sad-sacks like Obama, Reid, Pelosi, etc.--whose only ideology seems to be "We're not as crazy as them."
Lose/lose.
