I think the gay movement is overstepping it bounds here. They are allowed to be in the parade but allowing them to have a giant gay pride float distracts from the purpose of the parade which is Irish pride. Its not like a straight pride, Italian pride, black pride, woman's pride, muslim's pride ect would have been acceptable to promote during the parade either.

They're not allowed to identify themselves as gay in any way. The Saint Patrick's Day Parade is basically a series of smaller groups that march one after the other. You know like the local rotary club, kiwanis, vfw, what have you. So for example if you had a Stonewall chapter that wanted to march, they wouldn't be allowed to participate as an organization, even if they all showed up with pipes and drums. It's not gay people trying to put a giant pride-parade style float with oiled up shirtless dudes dancing to techno in the middle of the Saint Patrick's Day parade.

So I can only guess that there are no proud Irish homosexuals in New York or Boston? I guess their heritage isn't worth celebrating.

While I may not think that it's "right" (in that, I would "hope" that a group wouldn't do it, and I wouldn't do it if I were leading the group), I believe that this is a "private club". And, thus far, the government cannot mandate that any private club admit members or participants who the club wishes to exclude.
