This was actually Elizabeth Warren's idea IIRC.
She asked why Wall St. banks can borrow from the Fed for next to nothing but we sock our college students with things like this and then make the terms unforgiving.

I've been "paying down" my federal loans for close to 3 years now, close to $10,000 at this point.
Haven't paid down the principal a single red penny, it's all gone to interest. I just view the whole thing like taxes, which really they are.

It really doesn't matter how much you owe on an education loan, if there is an interest rate, you're being f**k over.
