I think its simple really, people probably believe in god, believe in other religious things but don't adhere to a specific group or church.

I was very close with this family of fundamentalist conservative Christians growing up. Bush was amazing, Islam was evil, gay people needed to be sent to camps, the whole bit. Their gay son killed himself after they sent him to one of these camps. They have now entirely rejected churches, read The Bible, and engage in their own interpretation of the same as guided by their prayer and personal philosophy. I'm guessing they would mark themselves as unaffiliated.
more and more people are this way I think. Hatred isn't a great selling point and that's what a lot of churches focus on. People are alienated by that.

Grew up Catholic, long line of Catholics going to waaaaay back when. Between my views, the abuse shit that got covered up, lack of allowing women into the hierarchy, and stance on SSM/couples, etc. my kids will never set foot into a church again unless they show up during Christmas and my wife drags them and even she's wavering. She may finally call it quits when the current priest (who I personally like and have a lot of respect for) retires in June.
