FDR was a Democratic Socialist, and he's arguably the best president the US has ever had.

Labels are important to some people I guess.
I would be curious if there is a single member of the Congress or the Senate who doesn't embrace some tenets of socialism. I doubt it.

the first concepts of socialism sprouted within the american and french revolutions and the revival of republicanism. it's not surprise there are socialist elements in our constitution.

"Socialist" has become a pejorative in the U.S.
Dane is exactly right: the ideas that Sanders has come from the era of people like FDR. We've somehow been fooled into believing we're a strictly "capitalist" society.
Plus, we are socialist right now anyway: lemon socialism.
