It's nothing short of amazing to me how rampant coerced confessions are--it's not something I gave any weight to until the last few years where I've seen some pretty heinous examples of it (best one being the teen in Making a Murderer.).

You're right, it's not about justice or getting the right person in this country, it's about getting somebody, anybody to take the rap so we can feel that justice has been served.

That's pretty disturbing.

Case closed looks good on the reports, and the report is all that matters.

This isn't torture. We do it to pledges all the time and they are fine.

While it certainly can cross the line depending upon the severity of it, I think the bigger point is being missed here. It impairs judgement, whether it is torture or not. It would be roughly equivalent to getting them terribly drunk. It would just be far more clear to a judge that such a confession would be in question.

Pathetic. We have surveillance everywhere, all sort of DNA and forensic evidence, electronic records of everything, and the government can spy on anyone they want. Scale has been tipped massively in your favor, law enforcement. If an aggressive (I don't mean physically aggressive) interrogation doesn't yield a confession from your suspect, go use all these tools you have at your disposal and do some f**k police work. Cops man. Bunch of f**k Hercs, no Lesters.
