Al Gore released the movie "An Inconvenient Truth" a few year back documenting rapid global warming. A lot of the movie has been proven to be sensationalist, but now people are more environmentally conscious than they were before the movie came out. Do you think that the movie helped propel the movement, or do you think the movement was going to happen anyways? Did the movie hurt the movement? Did Al Gore believe everything he said on the movie, or was he following the "Rules for Radicals" by Saul Alinsky, where the idea is that if you want people to one step left you must preach from two steps left so that when people move to the center, they'll be where you want them.

The film served its purpose at the time. It increased discussion about Global Warming. A documentary produced for the masses isn't something to build policy off of or start a legit movement from, but it can help bring the dialogue into mainstream discussion. That's what it helped to do.

It helped make Al Gore millions and to panic the easily swayed. I was told in the 70's that the climate would cool and people would starve for lack of food. Give it 30 years to know what horseshit it was/is.
global warming > climate change > tilt > reset prediction to fit current political climate > repeat

Mere exposure does nothing but help progressives. Once ignorant people are exposed to a widely-known concept, they have to consider it in terms other than the way their favorite pundit says.
Even if Inconvenient truth was total bullshit, all media exposure is good media exposure

I don't know how much it helped the actual environmentalism movement, but in terms of invading the public consciousness I can't think of a more successful documentary. The phrase "going green" went from being an obscure hippie relic of the 1970's, to a completely apolitical household term soccer moms use when they buy light bulbs and biodegradable diapers. Like Philly said, it changed the larger discussion in this country, which has changed government policy. To the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars. So there's that.
