If you're old enough you may remember the ploy the Dems used to try and get Clarence Thomas' SCOTUS nomination defeated (The Anita Hill debacle). Now 27 years later the tactic used then is being used now against Judge Kavanaugh. They know the votes are in for him. The best they can do is delay the confirmation process until the midterm election results. The Dems calculate that their only chance is to gain a Senate majority before the final vote on Kavanaugh.

IMO the accuser will be heard quickly and the voting process will continue at pace.
