What has gone wrong with American democracy?

Even a notorious pimp was inspired to associate himself with the head of state by calling himself “The Trump of Pahrump”, and got elected to Nevada’s state assembly after death. What has gone wrong with American democracy? What urgent actions should be taken to rectify the flaws and improve the democratic system?

The voter went wrong. Democracy is only as strong as we are and we’re pretty weak right now. Look at who won the election.

The voters didn't choose this. It's important to remember that.

despite a 3million+ advantage over John Kerry, had only a few thousand switched in Ohio from Bush to Kerry, Kerry would have won there. i wish it would have happened just so we'd stop hearing about how the voters didn't chose this blah blah blah
moving to direct election is well and good, but as it stands, by the rules of the game, voters did chose Trump. you're claiming getting more pieces from your opponent in chess makes you win, and reminding us all that hillary took more pieces that didn't matter from Trump and getting angry about it
i liked SNL with trump wishing that he'd never been president, and Clarence granting him a vision of it that like in It's a Wonderful Life, "in this version of history, all hillary had to do to win was visit Wisconsin once". ignoring part of the country is actually what exactly the electoral college is trying to prevent and in that respect it worked beautifully

The topic is about American democracy. The will of the people isn't a "bla bla bla" when discussing democracy, Galt.
The simple and inarguable fact is that the American people did not choose trump. I'm not suggesting direct democracy, merely that we elect leaders democratically. And we do...with the one, completely idiotic exception being the POTUS.
Sorry. But so long as a system exists where the will of the voters can be thrown out in favor of archaic nonsense designed to remedy colonial Rhode Island's little man syndrome, it is an outright lie to call this disaster something the voters chose. They literally chose the opposite. It wasn't even close.

Based on the system as it stands it's hard to argue that the voter's didn't choose this. Since the election isn't directly democratic it stands to reason that the voters used their preferences to allocate the number of electoral seats to our currently elected President.
Arguing otherwise is weird. You can argue that in the construct of "what it should actually be" but to argue anything otherwise would suggest a clear lack of understanding in terms of what it will take to the win the next election. You don't preface your path to victory with "how it should be." You deal with it "as it is." With that understanding now in mind - yes, the voters did choose this.

it's the will of the voters of the states, and it's non proportional, which isn't even a federal issue as some states allow splitting of electoral votes. in no state is the electoral college not elected
the sooner you admit that the american people chose that man is the sooner we can actually fix it going forward, because the people who moved to trump are the same people you have to win back over.
