We still don't have a Western consensus to confront China, and I'm deeply worried about that.
We should be making very clear, to one another and China, that any further trade deals are conditional on certain things... including the formal recognition of Taiwan, and firm compliance to the two systems, one country deal in Hong Kong. Unfortunately the British made a stupid deal, one we'll have to live with.
They'll never take that, and that's fine - we shouldn't be engaged in free trade with genocidal authoritarians. No trade deals. And if the assault on our business community and democracy continues, we should use our considerable intelligence capabilities to inflict equal economic and intellectual damage right back. No more compromises with China. They must be treated as an equal, meaning, a real threat.
I support Donald Trump's treatment of China, TBH. I hope to see it continued and made firmer and more powerful. It is the only thing that has ever made any sense about his administration and I truly hate saying that.
