well i just hear it all the time, and lumping Texas with Sudan is ridiculous. some parts of Mississippi can be argued, e.g., around the Port Gibson area (which bizarrely was saved from being razed to the ground because Grant allegedly thought it was "too beautiful" and when i drove through that area I thought i was in another country. old black men pointed and laughed at me from a park bench as I bewilderingly looked at structures made of tarp and corrugated metal), but not Florida or Texas. they have, for example, running water and electricity, which is in stark contrast with a "third world country". also first world == western world. the bottom 20% of americans have more PPP than all other nations except for 11 of them, including the US as a whole.
Americans learn only from catastrophe and not from experience. -- Theodore Roosevelt
My life has become a single, ongoing revelation that I haven’t been cynical enough.
