if we change chat just make it an IRC channel. otherwise leave it. going from one shoddy program to another isn't worth the hassle.

I definitely wouldn't have private conversations in the chat, as its viewable to anyone logged onto the board.
The problems we had with Ajax on PP was that it lagged often and it would also eat chat messages. Never could figure out what the cause was and it was never fixed. People complained about it quite a bit. When you look at the code and its 4 years since anything has been touched on it, that means its pretty much abandoned. True, we have used some "abandoned" mods here, but I know PHP well enough that I can fix problems or add features (assuming small ones). Ajax, not so much.
Ajax also likely caused some of the problems with PP at times as well, such as when the site would stall for no apparent reason. Quell had made some changes to it to lessen the impact, but I suspect it was a bit of a resource hog. I don't want the forum here to suffer from latency problems at the cost of a chat which people may or may not end up using very much.
As I've said before, if people can find a chat that is updated and integrates with the board, I'm all ears. But until then the only changes being made will be to the chat we have now.
