Okay guys, I might be overstepping my bounds but... this is just my opinion and doesn't necessarily reflect uber's, precocity or NAB's opinions on the matter.

Please, please use some judgement in the report post function, sometimes it's hard finding the wheat amongst all the chaff. If it's fairly clear cut, absolutely report it, if it's something that's borderline and you can let it go, do so. We all can cross the line at times and if it goes to where it is really creating discord amongst us, yeah it should be dealt with. You might even disagree with my/our decisions on how particular posts are handled, that's okay. Keep in mind sometimes we don't necessarily see things the exact same way.

While we all don't agree on everything and sometimes get little digs in, I think it's fairly safe to say most everybody here "knows" or at least is familiar with the other posters and there are no huge amounts of animosity amongst us. As far as I'm concerned we're a fairly tight knit community and I'd like to keep it that way. I don't think, at least I hope, anyone here wants draconian measures.

Anyway my 2 cents. Discuss?

What types of posts are being reported? Nothing specific of course.

The enforcement for rules around here has often demonstrated a double standard and when confronted on it, the official position of the staff is "oh, no one reported that one. We didn't see it."

I get the difficulty of the situation the staff can sometimes have but sometimes you guys are very strict about enforcing rules to the exact letter and other times it's laid back and you don't wanna get into hairsplitting.

Not to sound a like a broken record, but a lot of the problems stem from the vagueness of the rules most likely to be violated. To wit:

What for example is an insult or a personal attack. Rule 2.

What is trolling. Rule 6.

These are the big two, but there is a distinct contrast between rules 3 and 10 and 2 and 6.

The trolling one has me irritated. If the staff doesn't want rule 6 violations reported, then change the rule.

"trolling" is a completely subjective term. Perhaps rule 6 should be done away with.

On that I certainly agree. I feel like its just a weaksauce version of trolling in itself. Can't deal with an argument? Call it trolling as a distraction. It becomes a debate tactic.

Actually I just went and re-read rule 6. Here is the end of that rule:

"If you think someone is trolling, use the “Report” feature on the post in question. Let site staff determine if it is trolling or not."


Seems like a specific invitation for posts to be reported even if there is a question as to whether or not it will ultimately end up being considered a rule violation.
