how early is early because the franks and karlings were pretty a-ok with it and it only became more and more frequent. i really don't know what medieval era you're describing outside of maybe italy where the condotierri would basically play shuffleboard to see who won.

no one said feudal levies couldn't be trained, but they were still farmers and blacksmiths and whatever else playing soldier with the knights and nobles. that' why the crossbow was a godsend because of how little training it required. give it to any idiot and tell him to point and shoot and he was lethal. no need to teach a peasant boy the necessity of holding a shield up so his head isn't sliced off.
