Hmm, it seems that the Fiat G56 out performed both the bf 109K and G series and fw 190A in tests but the Germans wouldn't allow it's production.

Yes the Italians had some good military ideas, but during WWII their hearts weren't in it.. Especially after Mussolini allied himself with Hitler.. The Italian people were not fond of the Germans, so expecting them to fight and die for Germany, a country they hated, wasn't a going to work..

The Italians were pretty bad ass. There were reports of Italian units dying to the last man in North Africa. Even the British admired them, saying they were better fighters than the Germans, despite their inferior equipment.
