us and nz during wwii developed and determined the necessary explosives to unleash a tsunami at a targeted coastal city as a kind of back up plan had nuclear weapons not worked so splendidly by testing off the new zealand shore

lining up 2500 tons of explosives five miles from shore would be extremely difficult to do in a warzone though

I had heard rumors of this program years ago, as I understand it, the US had much smaller aims for this program, rather than destroying cities, they were looking for ways to disrupt onshore defenses prepared by the Japanese as part of pre invasion bombardments

Same amount of damage and no radiation. Seems like a good idea if you're fighting an enemy along a costline.

well the planting of the bombs would be hard to do. not only would it likely be exceedingly obvious that you were there and under kamikazee attack while you sat there waiting on divers to plant all those bombs, but the diving itself and planting them would be treacherous

it certainly would be a devastating attack but not so much as a nuke. the 2004 tsunami hit fourteen countries and killed 230,000 people. this would be a much smaller scale and people would be able to get away from it (some at least) whereas with nukes... no hiding from nukes

hard to escape a tsunami that starts 5 miles away. also the point of the bombs wasn't to kill people it was to destroy the cities themselves.
