I honestly think the P-51 Mustang heralded the turning point of the war when they had enough range to escort bombers to their target. The runner up would be the Me 262- if only Hitler wasnt an idiot they may have been able to get enough of them into production before Germany lost air superiority.

Define fighter aircraft.
As if its fighter/interceptor.
And If its critical turning point in war its probably the Hawker Hurricane Mk.II Without which the war might have ended in 1941 as a swift axis victory over europe.

The best fighter, qua fighter in terms of technical and engineering advancement though, probably the Vought F4U Corsair.

I voted Spitfire Supermarine, because I'm building a balsa model of one right now.
But I love all of the WWII warbirds.

262 obviously. It heralded in a new age in combat aircraft and could shoot down anything in the sky.

+1 for Boris. The Corsair looks the best too.

lol @ brits running the revisionist history schtick trying to make themselves out to be more important than they are.
ME-262 was the best fighter of the war
In terms of actually affecting the war, it was the mustang.
