2004 was a pretty decisive victory for the Republicans. 2008 and 2012 were less about the GOP performing poorly than a combination of recent events at the end of Bush's administration and Obama being the shit. I think it was easy to see this year's GOP problems on the horizon, but they haven't really been present until now. I think Clinton would be very defeatable against Rubio or Bush. And Bill Clinton probably loses in 1992 without Ross Perot.
To project this year's dynamic into the past, and certainly into the future, is wishful thinking.
