I would imagine a lot of questions are going to be asked on what the response will be, if any, and what can be done in the future to prevent another tragedy like this. It appears from what I've read that the Algerians were the only forces that were used. Seems surprising especially since a large number of the workers were foreign nationals.

From the article it sounds like the Algerians rejected foreign assistance.

Despite the tragedy, I can't say that I think negotiation is ever an acceptable way to deal with these lunatics.

Find out what they want, do the opposite. Consistently.

I must confess I am a little confused by the article, it seems when the forces got there they found 15 people who'd already been killed before the attack. Perhaps if I am reading that right, the Algerian forces had their hands forced and had to go in under prepared to try and save any that were still alive

And Emerald, your concern is fell placed. I lived next door to a woman who's brother was held hostage for 4 years, I cant remember where, it was a long time ago, but the emotional toll on her was horrible.

The problem is, if you negotiate and do a swap like they want, kidnappings for negotiations will greatly escalate.

Negotiating is only useful as a delaying tactic, or if they can be talked down. Actually agreeing to do anything substantial for terrorists is simply unacceptable.
