No wonder you guys are such rubes, you are uncultured and illiterate.
I read the FT and the NY Times daily. Times is shit now but it's always good to know what the shitlibs are up to. Economist and Businessweek on a weekly basis. If I'm in a sour mood I'll read the Journal or The Guardian. Sometimes you can find a few gems but most of it is uninformative and obnoxious. If I have the time I check Project Syndicate. I also have google alerts for topics that interest me, like how boomers have ruined the world, or Japanese demographic trends.
Most "Newspapers" are failing media companies masquerading as something noble. Overall I would say the long form is a long dying art. The research is still there but rather than make a proper argument you end up with there "Investigations" presented over 20 poorly tied together articles that have neither a coherent thesis nor narrative. The internet has dulled down the discourse and commoditised the newsprint business. We have 1000 outlets all writing the same 500 words about an event, and never a true in depth examination and report on the topic. The New York Times is mostly full of shit, they let david f**k brooks write for them every other day for gods sake! But they still on occasion do a proper dive into a topic and provide an entertaining article with good knowledge, which is why I read them. The guardian reads like the daily mail and the half the articles in the Journal could have been written by a clever piece of software.
