So is it SOP to burn the house down if you've got a dangerous perp cornered? The guy was a dangerous nut, but the police were incompetent from front to back on this thing.

Smoke and tear gas grenades essentially are firestarters, they give off a bit of fire so its not surprising that throwing a bunch of them into a cabin would set it on aflame- I dont think it was intentional but it happens when you use them.

There is a body, there isn't a body - damn media these days. They are so worried about being first on breaking a story that they don't check the sources of their info.

They torched the whole cabin and shortly after a single shot was heard. It seems likely that he shot himself so as to not be burned alive.

That or he didn't want to possibly face jail for the rest of his life. Either way I don't think he planned on being captured.
