Is Arming Ukraine a Good Idea?

i see no downsides to arming the ukrainians and allowing them to take their country back. russia isn't a threat and they know it. they would never go to war with NATO.

the Ukraine/Russia issue is more complicated than many people give it credit for, Russia has a valid interest in protecting ethnic Russians from a potentially hostile regime BUT we can't have Russia gobbling up its neighbors. Arming the Ukrainians is probably the right thing to do, but we should encourage a peaceful settlement.


NOT arming the Syrian rebels was definately the right thing to do. Arming them = arming Islamists. We should be pushing for a peaceful settlement there as well, something that keeps Assad in power.


side note: Syria should be an interesting issue in the '16 primary. the old neo-liberal/neo-con guard vs the doves and non-imperialists.

At present, President Obama has been reluctant to arm the rebels. I'm siding with him on this. It's not our fight. Ukraine and Russia need to settle it. Germany has already said they aren't in it.

Nah, Ukraine seems pretty worthless TBH. Not EU, not NATO, poor shithole, no oil, shitty government. Little to no value to the USA.

I would, however, strong support granting automatic asylum to any female Ukrainian war refugees under the age of 30.
