Reminder: Independent counsel is what gave us the Lewinsky scandal. being able to investigate without scope to look for wrongdoing is wrong. further the public ALWAYS believes the accuser/government and will always damn someone for something immediately so stopping unsubstantiated claims from going public protects national interests. example would be claiming russia hacked the election when no proof exists for that claim, and then doubling down and creating a diplomatic mess (thanks obama)

Whoever wanted it gutted should be the first to have their ethics checked. Seems they would be the ones with the most to hide.
