I should also mention that these Centrist Democrats - the ones who are basically worthless because they run away from anything remotely progressive at the first sign of danger - are also the first to go when Democrats are facing a tough election cycle. The reason why is not because they're in more conservative districts, but because they stand for nothing and to their constituents, they are nothing but the (D) next to their name. As generic empty suits, they come into office on a wave of dissatisfaction with Republicans, and are kicked out immediately with any bit of dissatisfaction with the Democrats, because their districts don't see them as anything but a generic politician carrying the Dem banner. Meanwhile, the ones who actually believe in something and build strong connections to their constituents through their ideas about public service tend to have longer careers because the other party can't just make you a stand in for Pelosi or whoever when people in your district actually recognize you as being your own person who stands for something more than your party affiliation.
