One of the main features of our mode of production is social isolation due to the alienating influence of a market economy where social interaction is limited to trying to take advantage of everyone else.
It's not surprising that people try to fill the void with watching fictional representations of social interactions. Also, unlike real people, you can turn TV off when they become tiresome so "social interaction" takes even less effort.
